StrategicExportControls.org (SEC) provides online training and assessment on Strategic Export Controls for the UK defence industry, to support responsible exporting, and demonstrate commitment to compliance.

The programmes have been developed by Cranfield University.

Use of personal data within SEC

Protecting personal data and privacy is important to us. Your personal information entered by your Company Manager will be used in the creation of the SEC account. The following minimum set of personal data is required to create the account; your title, first name, family name, company and email address. This information, and the transaction made when purchasing the training credits, forms a contractual agreement with the purchasing organisation and Cranfield University without which we cannot provide the service.

When you first log into the SEC service you will be prompted to confirm that all of the personal data listed is correct. You will be able to update and amend most of your personal data within the portal prior to taking the assessment. Once the course assessment has been taken the certificate will be generated, and for integrity reasons, requests to change data must be submitted to your Company Manager.

We give control over personal data to delegates and their Company Manager. We do this with the expectation that this control will not be misused to reallocate a ‘credit’ to another user by renaming the account. Automatic notifications will be sent to the Cranfield TEBS team when any changes to name and email addresses are made within the system. If we conclude that the account has been renamed to reallocate the credit to another delegate the account will be disabled and the credit lost.

Company Managers will have access to the personal data of delegates within their organisation only, this includes information on whether the assessment has been taken, passed or failed.

Use of anonymised data sets

The questions within the SEC assessments form a categorised question bank. When an organisation has in excess of 100 completed assessments administrators may review the collective anonymised results against the categorised questions. This helps companies to focus training efforts in the areas required. To protect the anonymity of the delegates within the organisation this feature is only available to organisations with over 100 completed assessments in a 12 month period. If your organisation has opted in you will see this on the profile panel.

You may wish to opt out of your data being used in this way; prior to changing these preference in the profile area of your account please check with your employer. Changing these settings could contravene your contractual obligations to your organisation. If you wish to opt out please raise this with your Company Manager.

As hosts of the SEC training Cranfield may use anonymised data to for the improvement of the service. For example a particular question may have an unusually high failure rate. By monitoring responses we identify trends and improve the course content where necessary.

We will never share your personal data, anonymised or otherwise with third parties outside of your organisation and if you choose to opt out of your data being used in this way it will be excluded from any data analysis reports.

You may choose to opt out of your data being by utilised in the anonymous data sets by amending your preferences. However, in doing so you impact on Cranfield’s ability to keep the material current, engaging and to identify areas of improvement. Using anonymised data in this way allows us to develop SEC in line with your needs and those of the wider community.
